Nazca in Perù: lines are talking... Nazca in Perù: le linee che parlano... Nazca en Perù: las lineas que hablan.

I belong to Africa in the heart, but I would stay anywhere in this world to discover its wonderful treasures: we have to remember that man has not only destroyed but also left precious and artistic evidences ! Ah if we could continue to embellish our world as our ancestors did!

Today ,we fly to Perù, in the land of Nazca, where I will show you "the desert who's talking", so the local natives call the area of the Pampa de Palpa: it is an area of 50 km between Nazca and Palpa in southern Peru, but the surface of interest extends for approximately 520 km in the plains of San Jose and the mountains of Rio Grande.
What is there so interesting to discover?
13,000 lines imprinted on the ground that form more than 800 drawings representing animals (including also a parrot, a whale, a hummingbird 180 meter long , a lizard, a condor, a spider 45 meters long), geometric figures and stylized human figures.

The first sighting occurred in 1927, when a pilot of the Peruvian airlines noticed, flying over the southern part of Perù, the strange figures carved on the ground, called
geoglifi or grabados.
The artists of these beautiful designs are people who lived before the Incas, between 300 b.c. and 500 a.d: the desert soil, devoid of vegetation and stony, it has facilitated the realization. The lines are drawn by removing the stones containing iron oxides from the surface of the desert, leaving a contrast with the clearer underlying gravel. The plain of Nazca was windy, but the surface of rocks absorb enough heat to raise the air, protecting the soil. So the designs remained intact for thousands of years.
Among the many assumptions about how these lines could be created and their significance, the most plausible is that the ancient Peruvians have first made in reduced scale drawings that were later shown magnified on the ground with the help of an appropriate grid of ropes. Some scholars believed that these masterpieces couldn't be drawn from the hand of a people, because they can't be observed directly from the ground. These theories are not entirely true: in fact there are many hills and mountains in Nazca, which would allow artists to observe their work in perspective. It must be remembered that, once drawn, the lines were bright yellow and clearly visible.

Similar drawings were found not only in Perù but also in Chile, England, California and Siberia. I will make a summary of the various studies and meanings of these lines in one of my next post.

I assure you that take that small plane and admire from the top Nazca lines is a great sight and still remains one of the most fascinating enigmas of archeology!
